Syllabus Revision

The Board of Studies of History conducted two meetings for UG Syllabus revision on 21st February and 7th march 2015.  The external members of the Board of Studies were

1. Dr. V. Sathish, Associate Professor, Department of History, University of Kerala, Trivandrum.

2. Dr. Lekha K Nair, Associate professor and Head, Department of History,S. N. College, Chempazhanthy, Trivandrum.

3. Dr. A. Sathiaraj, Associate Professor (Rtd.), Department of History, F M N College, Kollam.

Teaching and Learning

 Lecture method is commonly used. In addition to that Discussion method and Question answer method are also used. Quiz and debate are being conducted. Students are encouraged to take notes at the time of teaching. Printed notes are being supplied as study material. Power point presentation is done on selected topics. They are also encouraged to prepare notes of their own by referring books from the library.

Evaluation
Two Continuous Assessment Tests are being conducted in each semester. In addition to that class tests are being conducted. Student evaluation is conducted every year.

Value Education

Class teachers are taking value education classes in the second period of every Wednesday.

Mentoring

Mentoring is a new programme introduced in 2015-2016. Preliminary works are being done. In 2017-18 Dr. C Francis is the mentor of 29 students of III DC History. Dr. Vijindas S is the mentor of 25 students of II DC History. Dr. Deepthi P R is the mentor of 22 students of I DC and 6 students of III DC History. Ms Jyothi L Krishna is the mentor of 18 students of I DC and 10 students of II DC.

Best Practice

In order to promote national integration, interdepartmental quiz competition is being organized every year in connection with Independence Day celebrations.

Activity Report 2017-2018

2017-2018

  • A special lecture was arranged on 8th January 2018 on the topic “Methods and Practices in the age of Enlightenment”.  It was delivered by Dr. Burton Cleetus, Assistant Professor, Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He was the former student of this college.
  • The Department has also organised one more seminar on the “Challenges to Indian Democracy in the 21st Century on 22nd January, 2018.  It was sponsored by the Institute of Parliamentary Affairs, Government of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram. The seminar was inaugurated by Dr Joseph Antony, Associate Professor and Head, Dept of Politics, University of Kerala. The inaugural session was presided over by our college principal Dr Vincent B. Netto. It was felicitated by Rev. FrRolden Jose Jacob, the college manager and Dr Biju Lekshmanan, Director General of the Institute of Parliamentary Affairs. The keynote address was delivered by Dr P C Prasanna Kumar, Associate Professor, Dept of International Relations and Politics, Central University of Kerala, Kasargod. Two more research papers were presented in the seminar.

  • Inauguration of History Association
    The History Association of 2017-18 was inaugurated on 14th December, 2017 by Mr. Sony J, Assistant Professor, Department of English, FMNC, Kollam.
  • In connection with the Independence Day Celebrations, an Inter departmental quiz competition was organised on 10th August 2017. The winners were given cash prizes.
  • An invited talk was conducted on 19th July 2017.  The theme was “Reading the Past: Renaissance and Modernity in Kerala”.  The resource person was Sakhariya T, Assistant Professor, Department of History, Government Arts College, Trivandrum.

​2016-2017

  • The Department of History organised aone day seminar on “Dominant forces in the Historiography of India: Facts (and/or) Fancies”.  It was held on 28th March 2017.  The keynote address was done by Mr. Josy Joseph, Associate Professor, Department of English, S B College, Changanassery.  The theme of his talk was “Nation, Narration and Imagination: Historiography and its Discontents”. Four Research papers were presented in this seminar. 
  • Inauguration of History Association
    The History Association of 2016-17 was inaugurated on 14 February 2017. Chief Guest of the function was Dr. Vysakh A S, Assistant Professor, Department of History, S N College, Kollam.
  • Organised a Guest talk on February 17, 2017 in connection with the inauguration of History association. The theme was "Local History of Kollam". The Resource person was Dr Vysakh A.S., Assistant Professor, S.N. College, Kollam.
  • As a part of extension activity, Dr. C. Francis, the co-ordiinator of the Peoples Planning Programme conducted an orientation talk, campus cleaning and an economic survey in Kollam district.  Thirty Seven students participated in the different programmes.  Each student covered 25 household in their locality and conducted a study and submitted a report at the end.  This study was conducted to enhance the thrift habit of the households in the locality of the students in Kollam district. 
  • Quiz Competition
    In connection with the Independence Day Celebrations, an Inter departmental quiz competition was organised on 12th August 2016. The winners were given cash prizes.

2015-2016

  • In connection with the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. B R Ambedkar and the National Law Day celebrations, One-day National Seminar was organised on 8th December 2015. The theme of the seminar was the “Constitution of India: The Changing Dimensions”.
  • Extension Activity
    As a part of extension activity, Dr. C. Francis, the co-ordiinator of the Peoples Planning Programme conducted an orientation talk, campus cleaning and an economic survey in Kollam district.  Fifty five students participated in the different programmes.  Each student covered 25 household in their locality and conducted a study and submitted a report at the end.  This study was conducted to enhance the thrift habit of the households in the locality of the students in Kollam district. 
  • Inauguration of History Association
    The History Association of 2015-16 was inaugurated by Dr. A. Sathiaraj, Associate Professor (Rtd.), FMNC, Kollam. A Motivation class in connection with the inauguration of History Association was organised. The Resource person was Dr. A. Sathiaraj, Associate Professor, (Rtd.), Department of History, F M N C, Kollam.
  • In connection with the Independence Day Celebrations, an Inter departmental quiz competition was organized on 12th August 2015. The first prize was awarded to the Department of Economics and the second price was awarded to the Department of Physics.
  • Organised a one day National Seminar on "The Constitution of India: the Changing Dimensions" on December 8, 2015, funded by the College.

2014-2015

  • Dr. C. Stanley John, Head of the Department of History was the co-ordinator of IQAC.  Being the co-ordinator of IQAC, organized a seminar for the faculty members of this college on “The opportunities and Challenges of Autonomy” on 2 September 2014.
  • The autonomy declaration programme was also co-ordinated by Dr. C. Stanley John on 14 November 2014
  • Extension Activity

    A special lecture was arranged on 5th March 2015 on the topic “Recent Trends in Historical Writings”.  The Resource person was Dr. P. Jinimon, Assistant Professor, Department of History, University of Kerala, Kariavattom.  It was inaugurated by our College Manager, Rev. Fr Anil Jose.

2013-2014

  • Extension Activity
    As a part of extension activity, Dr. C. Francis, the co-ordiinator of the Peoples Planning Programme conducted an orientation talk, campus cleaning and an economic survey in Kollam district.  Thirty Four students participated in the different programmes.  Each student covered 25 household in their locality and conducted a study and submitted a report at the end.  This study was conducted to enhance the thrift habit of the households in the locality of the students in Kollam district. 
  • Organised a one day Multi-disciplinary National Seminar on "Women Empowerment in the 19th Century: the Kerala Factor" on March 15, 2013, funded by the Kerala State Higher Education Council.
